I started my business with a N1000 Capital- Chioma Uzochukwu; CEO PinkPrincess Collections

Give a brief introduction of yourself and tell us about your educational and professional background?
My name is Chioma Uzochukwu CEO PinkPrincess Collections, I hail from Nnewi in Anambra State, Nigeria, I have a degree in Business Management from The University of Nigeria (UNN), Enugu and professionally I make "Ankara" inspired accessories.

With a First Degree from one of the Premier University in the country, one would think you would had gone for a white collar job how did you end up making Ankara Accessories?

I never really got into it until about 4years after I left school.Though I have always had a flare for making things. Out of school, no job, "broke ass" me, Ankara started trending among celebs; very exotic thing then. Strutting their stuff in style magazine, looking glam I didn't know where to learn, so I started surfing the net and looking for DIYS.That's how it all started.

Meaning you never really enjoyed what you studied in school?
Am hopeful my degree will pay off some day but can't say I have so far. ‎

What inspired the name “PinkPrincess"

I have always liked pink as a colour; the name came when I made Ankara headbands only and I wanted people to think royalty when they wear it like a tiara.

Tell us about how you went about raising funds for your business?
Funding; I started my business with nothing. I had to go to my tailors shop to pick up pieces of bright fabrics. The rest cost little, summing it up I will say I started with up to N1000 capital. ‎

When did you start off officially?

I started 2012 officially. Though I started displaying my work on BBM December of 2011‎

Are you into accessory making alone?

No I have a clothing  line too called  PinkPrincessCouture

Tell us about the challenges?
Oh! the challenges; I was really in my comfort zone working from home and my hubby was very understanding. He let me use a space in our house to create, believe me it was messy but he didn't mind. It was the going out to get a shop that was challenging; here I was in a town (Onitsha) that didn't really appreciate the art and have few people that saw fashion my way. How was I going to break even if I go out and get a shop? Will I make it? or run back home defeated? I was so skeptical and at the end I made it through. Again when I wanted to start designing, my fear was who would buy. Will I get the type of clients I wanted. ‎

Tell us what your business will look like in 3-5 years and your plans?
Am still building my business, It hasn't been easy breaking through but am in a better place than I was 2 years ago. So in the next 2-3years I hope to be a house hold name; I want to affiliate with top designers within and outside Nigeria, host a talent hunt show and have a foundation that gives back to the community, by empowering women to be their own boss‎

Say something to the up and coming who want to start off their own business.

Yes if I started with nothing you could too. Some of us are not blessed with seeing things and figuring out how it's made. You can enroll in a skill acquisition class anywhere. We hold ours once every month. Start with friends. Be your own billboard. Be very passionate about what you do. Let it reflect in your daily life. ‎
